We support children of all abilities, working together to prepare them for life

ADAPT’s commitment to Children’s Services includes comprehensive education for children and young adults. Our preschool, school age, and after school programs are specifically designed to engage and educate children with special needs. Our universal pre-kindergarten and integrated programs offer families a high-quality family friendly learning environment for children of all developmental levels. All classes are led by licensed and certified teachers and are staffed with certified teaching assistants.

We also offer after school programs, a summer day camp and educational resources libraries.

We offer year-round preschool programs with comprehensive educational and therapeutic programs serving children ages three to five with physical and/or developmental disabilities. Various services, assistive technologies and therapies are available to help children with specific needs become learners in unusually supportive environments.

Our educational evaluations help ensure that each child finds the placement that is right for them. Our preschool services include speech, physical and occupational therapy, psychology, adaptive equipment, vision training, assistive technology, as well as specialized classroom models including augmentative communication and computer assisted instruction.

UNIVERSAL PRE-Kindergarten (Pre-k)

Our Universal Pre-K program offers families a free, high-quality, family friendly learning environment for children of all developmental levels. A wide range of services is available, from play, music and art, sensory rooms, adaptive technology and physical education to feeding, physical, speech and language therapies.

Many of our locations have their own special offerings like a large indoor adaptive swimming pool in Brooklyn, 12 acres of open play space in the Bronx, easy access to shopping and parks in Manhattan, and outdoor and indoor adaptive playgrounds on Staten Island.

Integrated UPK classroom programming offers healthcare services, respite services, summer camp programs, Medicaid coordination, access to our TechWorks technology resource centers and SHARE lending libraries.

ADAPT Preschool and School-Age special education programs are made possible by the New York State Education Department and the New York City Department of Education.

Located in Brooklyn, we provide school-age education for children and adolescents between the ages of five and 21 with severe physical disabilities and unique educational, therapeutic and medical needs.

Teachers use Individualized Education Plan (IEP) to meet the customized learning needs of students while
emphasizing academics, social and physical independence, quality of life skills, and transition to adult services. Our school environment offers barrier-free classroom settings with a focus on the following resources:

  • Specialized instruction
  • Computers and assistive technology
  • Augmentative communication
  • Adaptive positioning
    and handling
  • Adaptive physical education
  • Aquatic therapy and swimming activities

Funding is made possible by the New York State Education Department and the New York City Department of Education, and supplemented by donations to ADAPT. As a non-public school, eligibility for this program is determined by the New York City Department of Education.

We offer after school programming for students with disabilities, between the ages of five and 21, who attend 175 Lawrence Avenue and P.S. 396 in Brooklyn, P.S. 138 in Manhattan and P.S. X121 in the Bronx.

Our after school programs provide a variety of stimulating activities in an integrated setting, offering children and adolescents an opportunity to have fun, learn new skills and develop friendships. Activities include arts and crafts, cooking and nutrition, interactive games and more. After school programming also gives families important time for respite during a period of the day when childcare is critically needed. These programs are offered where the children attend school during the day. Transportation back to their homes is provided at the end of the day.

Programs are provided through a collaborative effort between ADAPT and the NYC Department of Education. Operates Tuesday-Friday from 3:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. from mid-October through late June, and follows the public school calendar.
